A couple of fast- moving weather systems will pass through the state, but lake effect and upslope snow showers will fill in between the more- constant periods of snow. The southeastern third of the state will see less than an inch of snow over this period, mainly on Wednesday night. The heaviest snowfall is expected to occur across the northwestern portion of the Commonwealth, immediately downwind of Lake Erie. More than a foot of additional snow is expected through New Year's Day in the normal lake effect snow belt near Erie. Portions of the northwest Alleghenies and Laurel Highlands will also pick up notable accumulations, with another 6 to 12 inches of snowfall expected by Thursday morning. Lows between 15 and 25 degrees are expected tonight. Afternoon highs will be mainly 25 to 35 degrees on Wednesday. An arctic cold front will blast through the state during the evening and first half of the night during New Year's Eve activities. The front will generate snow showers and squalls as it crosses the entire state from northwest to southeast. The front will probably reach Erie just after sunset, Pittsburgh in the late evening, and getting close to Scranton, Harrisburg, and Chambersburg right around midnight. Midnight temperatures will range from the mid teens in the northwest to around the freezing mark in Philadelphia, Harrisburg and Chambersburg. The wind chills will be down in the single digits over the northwest at that time, and teens and 20s elsewhere. Plan ahead for the blustery weather if you plan to be on the roads, even for a short time, as we turn the page to 2026. $$
