Conditions will be unfavorable for the rapid growth and spread of wildfires through the rest of the weekend. Currently, a surface low was located near Childress, and rotating southeastward towards the TX Big Country. A surface trough extends southwestward from this low along a line from Childress to Hobbs, resulting in a wind shift to the northwest on the backside of the surface trough. Southwesterly winds prevailed to the south of the low and ahead of the surface trough, and winds will continue to transition to the northwest as the surface trough sags southward throughout the afternoon and into the evening hours. Winds may temporarily become variable in direction along the immediate vicinity of the surface trough this afternoon. After dark, winds will continue to veer northward and eventually become northeast after midnight CST, with a backdoor cold front moving into the Rolling Plains by dawn Sunday. The front should stall across the far southeastern TX PH Sunday, resulting in a wind shift. Winds will prevail from the northeast behind the front, with a transition to the south in the pre-frontal airmass up onto the Caprock. Warm temperatures are expected this afternoon and Sunday, yielding RH minima in the lower teens near the NM state line to near 20 percent along the 100th meridian this afternoon. Expect a similar gradient in RH Sunday, though slightly higher, or near the middle- upper teens along the NM state line to above 30 percent along the 100th meridian.
