532 FNUS55 KCYS 281920 FWFCYS Fire Weather Planning Forecast for Southeast Wyoming/Western Nebraska National Weather Service CHEYENNE WY 120 PM MDT Sun Jun 28 2026 ...FIRE WEATHER WATCH IN EFFECT FROM MONDAY MORNING THROUGH MONDAY EVENING FOR THE HIGH PLAINS OF SOUTHEAST WYOMING AND WESTERN NEBRASKA... .DISCUSSION... Elevated fire weather conditions are expected to develop this afternoon as south to southwest flow continues aloft. However, winds will remain a bit lighter than they were yesterday, and cooler temperatures are keeping RH a smidge higher as well. Therefore, no fire weather headlines are anticipated today. Fire weather conditions escalate Monday as a strong storm system passes to our north. First, we will see a surge in northwest winds overnight and into early Monday morning across the area, keeping much of the area breezy overnight. Winds will shift southwest Monday morning and then rapidly strengthen in the late morning, peaking around noon or shortly after. The strongest winds, with widespread gusts of 40 to 50 mph and localized gusts over 60 mph will occur between about 10AM and 3PM. After that, expect winds to tilt slightly more westerly and gradually ease through the evening. Critical RH is expected over the High Plains south of the North Platte River, increasing confidence in critical fire weather conditions. While current RH forecasts north of the North Platte River are not strictly critical at this time, the magnitude of the wind suggests that fire control issues are still probable despite RH only between about 15 and 20%. Therefore, a Fire Weather Watch was issued for all of the High Plains of southeast Wyoming and western Nebraska for Monday. Elevated fire weather conditions will also continue west of the Laramie Range due to the strong southwest winds, but due to fuels remaining in greenup status, these areas were not included in the Watch. Elevated to near critical fire weather conditions will remain the theme for the rest of the week as we begin a slow warming trend and humidity remains low. While widespread strong winds are unlikely Tuesday onwards, we may remain breezy across the area which will keep us on watch for critical fire weather conditions. Southwest flow continuing may also continue to advect smoke in from large wildfires in UT and CO.
