988 FXUS65 KVEF 291036 AFDVEF Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 336 AM PDT Mon Jun 29 2026 .KEY MESSAGES... * Breezy-to-gusty afternoons continue through the work week as temperatures gradually climb back toward seasonal normals. && .DISCUSSION...Today through Independence Day. The western CONUS will remain situated beneath an upper-level trough through the work week. This pattern is conducive for shortwave troughs to move through the flow aloft, bringing with them breezy afternoons. In addition to breezy conditions, the region will remain quite dry, so those recreating outdoors with sparks or flames (charcoal grills, safe-and-sane fireworks, target practice) are encouraged to exercise caution and ensure there is a bucket of water nearby to prevent any fire starts. That said, there are slight chances (10-30 percent) of showers and thunderstorms in the eastern Sierra / northern Owens Valley this afternoon. Forecast HRRR soundings show a pronounced inverted-V, though, indicating there is substantial dry air at the surface. As a result, convection is unlikely to result in widespread wetting rain; fire starts due to dry lightning cannot be ruled out, as well as strong gusty winds from the direction of storms that form. Temperatures will gradually climb through the week, reaching near-normal readings by Friday. Late-week, ridging builds back over northern Mexico and the southern United States, allowing temperatures to climb above-normal for the holiday weekend. && .AVIATION...For Harry Reid...For the 12Z Forecast Package...8 to 12 knot northeasterly winds will continue through later this morning when winds will decrease in magnitude as they begin to veer around to the southeast. For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...For the 12Z Forecast Package...Northerly-to- northeasterly winds will continue through the morning across southern Nevada and northwestern Arizona, including the Colorado River Valley. The strongest of these northerly winds will be in the Colorado River Valley this morning, where 20 to 30 knot northerly gusts will continue through late morning. Winds will decrease in magnitude during the afternoon as they begin to settle into typical diurnal directional trends. Winds across the Western Mojave Desert will follow typical diurnal trends with gusty westerly winds picking up late this afternoon, continuing into the evening hours. Winds in the Owens Valley will also follow typical diurnal directional trends, with breezy upvalley winds in the afternoon swinging around to the northwest around sunset.
