550 FXUS65 KVEF 010520 AFDVEF Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 919 PM PST Sat Feb 28 2026 .KEY MESSAGES... * Warm and dry conditions prevail across the region through this weekend. * A weak low pressure system will bring modest cooling to the region early in the week, though temperatures will remain above normal. * An additional low pressure system may bring another round of gusty winds and cooler temperatures later in the week. && .DISCUSSION...through next week. Another warm afternoon is underway across the region with mostly clear skies. The current temperatures as of the 1 pm hour are near or exceeding 80 degrees across the lower Mojave Desert valleys, and 60s and 70s across the southern Great Basin and Owens Valley. A handful of dally records are again probable today. Enhanced surface mixing via elevated southwesterly surface winds will help boost temps to their peak on Sunday before a modest cooldown arrives for Monday and Tuesday. Heat risk through the weekend will remain in the Minor category (level 1 of 4), primarily impacting those without access to adequate cooling or hydration as well as those visiting from cooler climates. Early next week, a weak low pressure system will creep across the Great Basin, resulting in a reduction in heights and subtle cooling of regional temperatures. In addition, gusty southwesterly winds will overspread much of the area, especially the Western Mojave Desert near Barstow with wind gusts of 40-50 mph expected. Some minor precipitation chances are also advertised along the southern Great Basin, closer to the cooler air aloft associated with the trough, though any precipitation amounts are expected to be light. Heights will rebound midweek with some brief shortwave ridging building in, however, a secondary, stronger shortwave is expected to drop south into the region Thursday into Friday. This will result in an additional uptick in gusty winds and reinforcing shot of cooler air, sending high temperatures downward closer to early March normals. && .AVIATION...For Harry Reid...For the 06Z Forecast Package...Light winds are expected through Sunday morning.
