755 FXUS65 KSLC 291850 AFDSLC Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Salt Lake City UT 1250 PM MDT Mon Jun 29 2026 .KEY MESSAGES, Issued 1002 PM MDT Sun Jun 28 2026... - Spring-like temperatures will gradually warm to near normal later this week. - Several shortwaves will move through the area this week which will enhance southwesterly flow across the region leading to near-critical and critical fire weather conditions, particularly on Thursday and Friday. && .DISCUSSION, Issued 1002 PM MDT Sun Jun 28 2026... An unusually cold airmass for this time of year has settled into the region. This resulted in temperatures in the 30s and 40s across most areas. In fact, precipitation moving through northern Utah this morning produced accumulating snow across the ridgelines. This cooler air has helped to bump up humidity and weaken winds across the area. That has limited fire growth today with very little smoke seen on visible satellite for our area. High temperatures are running about 15 degrees below normal across the north with slightly warmer temperatures further south. Lows tonight will be a few degrees warmer than last night which will keep freezing temperatures bound to the high terrain that is mostly absent of agriculture. A trailing wave will move through the Great Basin tomorrow which will keep highs 10 degrees below normal. Southwesterly winds will increase across eastern Utah tomorrow. These winds will pair with low relative humidity to create critical fire weather conditions across the San Rafael Swell and Henry Mountains. Critical fire conditions will be limited across the western Uinta Basin thanks to increased moisture and some afternoon convection across the Uinta Mountains. As the trough axis stays centered over western British Columbia with shortwaves pivoting through the western CONUS the pressure gradient will remain tight with increased southwesterly flow. This will lead to critical fire weather conditions becoming more widespread on Thursday and Friday, but wind gust magnitudes so far look limited to the 25-35 mph range. Ridging starts to build back into the area later this weekend. This will bring temperatures back up to near normal by Saturday with above normal temperatures by Sunday and Monday, but this will also bring a weakening in the pressure gradient allowing winds to relax and the fire weather risk to decrease. && .AVIATION... KSLC...VFR conditions are forecast to persist at the KSLC terminal through the period. Diurnal wind shifts are expected with a shift around 04z. REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...VFR conditions are forecast to prevail through the TAF period. Diurnal wind shifts are expected at all sites. && .FIRE WEATHER, Issued 211 AM MDT Mon Jun 29 2026... After a lull in winds and increased humidity today (along with cooler temperatures), a trailing wave will move through the Great Basin tomorrow which will elevate winds again. Southwesterly winds will increase across eastern Utah tomorrow, but temperatures will remain ~5-10 degrees below normal. These winds will pair with low relative humidity to create critical fire weather conditions across the San Rafael Swell and Henry Mountains. Critical fire conditions will be limited across the western Uinta Basin thanks to increased moisture and some afternoon convection across the Uinta Mountains. Afternoon wind gusts will be in the 25-30 mph range with min RH in the upper single digits to low teens. Winds will subside on Wednesday while RH remains low before another tightening of the pressure gradient increases winds again for Thursday and Friday across much of the region. Wind gust magnitudes for the end of the week currently range from 25-35 mph. && .SLC WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
