876 FXUS64 KSJT 300628 AFDSJT Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Angelo TX 1228 AM CST Tue Dec 30 2025 ...New LONG TERM... .KEY MESSAGES... - Near to below freezing temperatures expected to start Tuesday morning. - Warming trend for New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, with well- above normal temperatures Friday through the weekend. && .SHORT TERM... (This evening through Tuesday) Issued at 113 PM CST Mon Dec 29 2025 Behind yesterday's strong cold front, strong surface high pressure and continued cold air advection (CAA) via northerly surface winds is resulting in temperatures early this afternoon that are only in the mid 30s to low 40s. With continued overcast skies over much of the region and the aforementioned CAA, not expecting temperatures to warm much more today, with highs in the upper 30s to mid 40s. Mid level moisture and enhanced frontogenesis at 700 mb is resulting in a west to east oriented area of light radar returns across West Central Texas (mainly the Concho Valley, Heartland, and southern Big Country). With a dry low layer, a good amount of the precipitation is evaporating before reaching the surface. For precipitation that is reaching the surface, the precipitation type from these radar returns is generally light sleet pellets, flurries and/or drizzle, due to a low to mid level profile that is hovering around freezing. With the surface temperatures that are a few to several degrees above the freezing mark, any wintry precipitation that does occur is melting on ground contact. Thus, no impacts are expected. Any precipitation should end by early evening. With the core of the surface high moving over the region tonight, the pressure gradient will weaken, resulting in light winds overnight. However, continued cloud cover should moderate radiational cooling over central and especially southern parts of the forecast area, while clearer skies over the Big Country should result in better radiational cooling in that area. Thus, expect lows tomorrow morning in the mid to upper 20s in the Big Country and Heartland, and upper 20s to low 30s elsewhere. Weaker high pressure, southwesterly surface/low level flow returning, and sunny skies will result in some warming Tuesday, with highs in the mid to upper 50s. && .LONG TERM... (Wednesday through Monday) Issued at 1227 AM CST Tue Dec 30 2025 Mild and dry weather will prevail the remainder of the week as we head into 2026. West-northwest flow aloft will set up over our area for the middle to latter part of the week. A shortwave trough will move across the Plains on Friday sending a weak cold front into our area. The only noticeable effects will be a wind shift and slightly cooler temperatures in the northern Big Country. An upper level ridge will then build into our area over the weekend. Overall, this will translate to mild and dry conditions. Highs will be in the mid to upper 70s Thursday through Sunday. && .AVIATION... (06Z TAFS) Issued at 956 PM CST Mon Dec 29 2025 North to northwest winds will continue to decrease and become variable overnight. Otherwise, VFR conditions are expected through the end of the TAF period. && .PRELIMINARY POINT TEMPS/POPS...
