876 FXUS64 KJAN 290649 AFDJAN Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Jackson MS 149 AM CDT Mon Jun 29 2026 ...New AVIATION... .KEY MESSAGES... - Dangerous heat stress intensifies areawide today, & continues through the week. && .DISCUSSION... Issued at 140 PM CDT Sun Jun 28 2026 This afternoon through next Sunday... Another round of hot and quiet weather conditions is in the forecast for this afternoon as the high pressure at both the surface and aloft continue to gradually shift northeast and east of the Lower Mississippi River Valley. Similar to yesterday, sky conditions will remain mostly sunny across the area with daytime highs peaking into the mid to upper 90s. The ongoing daytime heating combined with dewpoints in the low to mid 70s will cause heat indices to exceed above 105 degrees across much of our CWA. Portions of northeast MS will remain below the 105 heat index criteria. At this time no changes have been made to the heat graphic for this afternoon and "Elevated" risk for dangerous heat will continue to be advertised for portions of south and central MS and areas west of the MS River. Likewise, the heat advisory remains in effect for much of our CWA including portions of southeast AR and all of our northeast LA parishes from noon today to 9 pm Monday. The evening period will remain quiet across our forecast area. Sky cover will start of mostly clear with clouds beginning to increase coverage from the southwest by daybreak early Monday morning. Overnight lows will dip into the mid 70s. Dangerous heat stress will continue to be the primary focus for the extended forecast period Monday into Tuesday. Afternoon highs for both of these days will peak into the mid to upper 90s. Currently, heat indices look to be their highest Monday and Tuesday and will continue into Sunday as heat indices could reach up to around 110 degrees. The heat advisory has been expanded further east to cover the rest of our CWA. The advisory has also been extended to 9 pm Tuesday. At this time, the "Elevated" areawide heat graphic for this week will continue to be advertised. There is a chance that portions of the "Elevated" risk could get upgraded to a "Significant" risk for dangerous heat where heat indices could exceed above 110 degrees as we get closer to Tuesday. A heat warning may eventually needed for a good portion of the area by Tuesday. If a heat warning is issued for Tuesday, it will likely start from the I-59 corridor and cover areas south of I-20. As we go through the mid-week and heat stress continue to worsen, general thinking is to expand the heat warning further north towards the Delta. Rain and storm chances will begin to increase Tuesday evening through Saturday as a few disturbances caught up in easterly flow affect the area. This could have an affect on how high heat index readings could get. A few strong to marginally severe storms cannot be ruled out for much of our area, especially Tuesday and Wednesday. The 4th of July holiday weekend will be hot, humid, and have decent chances for scattered convection and storms. Be sure to keep an eye on the forecast for future updates so that outdoor activities can be planned accordingly. We will continue to keep an close eye on heat trends as we head into the new work week. /CR/ && .AVIATION...
