810 FXUS62 KFFC 291037 AFDFFC Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Peachtree City GA 637 AM EDT Mon Jun 29 2026 ...New 12Z Aviation Discussion... .KEY MESSAGES... - Another Heat Advisory will be in effect for most of Georgia including the Atlanta Metro for Monday from 12 PM to 8 PM. - Heat builds through the week, with afternoon highs climbing into the 90s and heat index values over 100 for much of the week. - Chances for afternoon showers and thunderstorms are expected in east Georgia today. Isolated to scattered thunderstorms are possible each afternoon through the week. && .SHORT TERM... (Today through Tuesday) Issued at 308 AM EDT Mon Jun 29 2026 The short term period will be characterized by an upper level ridge continuing to amplify and spread eastward over the region. At the 500 mb level, the ridge will be between 595-600 dam, which is close to 2 standard deviations above normal for this time of the year. Temperatures will continue their climb under this ridge. Lows this morning will start the morning in the mid to upper 70s across the majority of the area. High temperatures this afternoon will rise into the mid to upper 90s, with slightly lower values in the far northeast mountains. Dewpoints remaining in the low to mid 70s will combine with these hot afternoon temperatures and lead to heat index values in the mid 100s everywhere except the far northern tier of the state. Locations in east-central Georgia will furthermore see heat indices in the upper 100s and approaching 110 degrees in the peak heating hours. As such, another Heat Advisory is in effect from 12 PM to 8 PM EDT today, this time for an area along and south of a rough line from Rome to Canton to Gainesville. Those planning to spend time outdoors should take necessary precautions, drink plenty of fluids, and take frequent breaks in the shade and air conditioning. With the axis of the of the aforementioned ridge centered over Alabama today, weak shortwave disturbances are expected to continue traversing the eastern periphery of the ridge, moving from eastern Tennessee towards the Georgia/South Carolina coast. As a result, scattered thunderstorms are forecast to develop over far northeast Georgia by mid-afternoon, spreading south through eastern Georgia through the evening. PoPs are at most 30-40% in the eastern fringe of the forecast area, with lesser chances to the west. Uncertainty in PoPs increases later in the evening considering downstream evolution of thunderstorms as they propagate south. Storms that develop will be capable of producing frequent lightning, heavy rainfall, and gusty winds, though widespread and organized severe weather is not expected. The high pressure regime will continue on Tuesday, with conditions expected to be similar to today. Low temperatures in the mid to upper 70s once again will not provide substantial relief from the hot conditions during the day. High temperatures and heat indices on Tuesday will be in the mid 90s and mid 100s respectively across all but the far northern tier, which will likely warrant another Heat Advisory on Tuesday. With the axis of the ridge shifting further to the east, afternoon thunderstorms will be more diurnally-driven in nature compared to today. && .LONG TERM... (Tuesday night through Sunday) Issued at 308 AM EDT Mon Jun 29 2026 The center of the mid-level ridge will be over the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys late Tuesday, expected to gradually shift east as we head into the holiday weekend. This patten will keep elevated temperatures and heat index values in the forecast with above normal highs and lows each day. Afternoon temperatures top out in the mid to upper 90s for most locations, with a few spots creeping into the triple digits late week into Independence Day. With dewpoints in upper 60s to mid 70s during the day, heat indices will be over 100 degrees throughout the entire long term forecast. More heat products are likely to come through the week as some locations see heat index values exceed 105 degrees. As for lows, a few locations may approach record high minimums as we bottom out in the mid or even upper 70s for many areas. Daily low rain chances are also seen as disturbances round the center of the high pressure to the north of the forecast area. Only isolated to scattered showers or non-severe thunderstorms are expected at this time given the upper level pattern. && .AVIATION...
