Another Heat Advisory is in effect for most of Georgia including the Atlanta Metro for Monday from 12 PM to 8 PM. - Heat builds through the weekend into next week, with afternoon highs climbing into the 90s and heat index values over 100 for much of the week. - Chances for afternoon showers and thunderstorms are expected in far north Georgia through this evening and in east Georgia on Monday. Isolated to scattered thunderstorms are possible each afternoon through the week. && .SHORT TERM... (This afternoon through Monday) Issued at 129 PM EDT Sun Jun 28 2026 An amplifying ridge continues to spread eastward, increasing temperatures through central and northern Georgia. At the surface, high pressure centered over the Gulf remains relatively in place through Monday. The main concerns today and Monday are the heat. With the height rises from the ridge, confidence is increasing for heat indices of 103-105 with more widespread 105+ from the Atlanta Metro and south, with the higher heat indices further south. With this, a Heat Advisory is in effect through 8 PM and a new Heat Advisory will be in effect for the majority central Georgia including the Atlanta Metro from 12 PM through 8 PM. Additionally, as the high shifts eastward, showers and thunderstorms are possible on the eastern fringe for the far northern Georgia locations. Current guidance shows decent instability but weaker W/NW winds, an environment not particularly favorable for severe weather. At this time, guidance depicts a few scattered showers popping up this afternoon ahead of a cluster of thunderstorms diving down from Tennessee into the evening hours. Given the location of the surface high, the higher chances (30-50%) are concentrated in the northern counties. Though unlikely, cannot rule out a brief strong storm this evening. As for Monday, another slight chance (15-30%) for scattered showers and thunderstorms, mainly across central and eastern Georgia. && .LONG TERM... (Tuesday morning through next Saturday) Issued at 129 PM EDT Sun Jun 28 2026 No major chances to notate in the extended period. High pressure remains dominate over Georgia for the rest of the week as the center of the H500 ridge stays over the gulf coast states, only shifting northeast towards the Mid Atlantic region at the end of the week. Many locations in the CWA will host 850 mb temperatures around 20 degrees Celsius through the rest of the week for the late afternoon hours. This combined with >590 decimeter heights will support hot high temperatures over much of Georgia. On average, highs will top out in the mid to upper 90s for the week, lows may only fall to the lower or mid 70s. High-end relative humidity also prevails over the CWA, which leads to the main impact this week: Hot heat indices over 100 degrees each day, and for some locations over 105 degrees. Heat safety precautions are still encouraged as heat product issuance seems likely for the next several days. Despite high pressure lingering over the region, daily thunderstorm chances are still present through the week. General thunderstorms are expected with isolated to scattered coverage shifting through the FA depending on the day. Strong mid-level theata-e values will support convective development off the axis of the high pressure center. However, diurnal heating will need to overcome strong inhibition in order for convective initiation to be achieved. && .AVIATION...
