863 FXUS65 KBYZ 291826 AFDBYZ Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Billings MT 1226 PM MDT Mon Jun 29 2026 .KEY MESSAGES... - Impacts from high elevation mountain snow will come to an end this evening as snow levels rise. - Wind gusts today of 40-55 mph along the western foothills, and 30-40 mph further east. - Return to seasonable temperatures beginning Tuesday. - Increasing thunderstorm potential Wednesday through Friday; strong to severe storms possible. && .DISCUSSION... Today through Sunday... An upper level low currently over central MT continues to bring precipitation to western and central MT. This low is projected to move northeast through the evening, bringing low to moderate precipitation chances across south-central MT through the afternoon and early evening. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are possible early afternoon across east central MT as low CAPE values exist there. Additionally, with the low overhead and exiting northeast, gusty westerly winds 30-40 mph will track into eastern MT through the overnight hours. As the low exits the region, heights will begin to rise, increasing snow levels. This will allow for snow to transition to rain as precipitation tapers off this evening. Into Tuesday, temperatures will begin to rebound to the 70s and low 80s with only isolated showers expected over the higher terrain. Wednesday through Friday will bring about multiple shortwave disturbances, allowing for daily chances of afternoon showers and thunderstorms. None of these days show particularly strong forcing, but will be something to keep an eye on for strong to severe thunderstorm potential. Into the weekend, ensembles are in good agreement for ridging to take place, allowing for mild and warm conditions. Temperatures will remain consistent through the weekend, generally in the 70s and 80s. TS .AVIATION... Scattered showers continue to spread from west to east this afternoon. Look for MVFR to IFR conditions under heavier showers. Gusty WNW winds of 25 to 40 knots will continue to spread eastward as well, before decreasing overnight for most terminals. Look for precipitation to end this evening as well. Expect mountain obscurations through the period with snow showers. Matos && .PRELIMINARY POINT TEMP/POPS...
